FLAGS of our mothers

Hand Painted Canvas, Satin Backing, Bullion Fringe, Brass Grommets
Approx. 25” x 45”

Partly inspired by the banners of Masonic and Odd Fellows Folk Art, the artist aims to reclaim and reassign the classically male trope of fraternity art, to the sisterhood of feminism, employing symbolism and quips of empowerment or awareness on hand-painted flags. Sewn on the artist’s grandmother’s 1960’s Elna sewing machine, the process of creation involved the transcendence of knowledge and technique passed on from generations of women before, who sewed for both necessity and self-expression.
